You have one awkward base cabinet and a budget for one fix. Lazy susan or pull-out drawer? Most articles that answer this are written by cabinet makers for remodels, where both options get screwed in. In a rental the question is different: which one works freestanding, fits through your door opening, and leaves no holes.
Short version: a lazy susan wins in corners and on square-ish shelves where you store lots of small things. A pull-out wins on straight, deep runs where you store bigger things in rows. The rest of this page is how to tell which cabinet you actually have.
Quick answer / top pick: Corner or square shelf full of jars and bottles: lazy susan. Deep straight cabinet full of pans, boxes or cleaning bottles: a freestanding pull-out basket. If you cannot decide, a rectangular turntable splits the difference.
Constraints we optimize for: corner vs straight run · round vs square footprint · door opening and hinge · freestanding vs adhesive vs screw-in · what you store

Measure before you buy
- Opening width at the hinge side, and whether there is a centre stile or shelf lip. A pull-out needs a clean, flat path; a turntable just needs to pass through once.
- Depth to the back wall or pipes. Pull-outs need the full run; turntables need depth minus hinge as their diameter.
- Shape of the floor: if width and depth are close, round fits well. If depth is much bigger than width, round wastes the back and a pull-out wins.
- Height of the tallest item. Pull-out baskets have sides; turntables are open.
- Cardboard test: cut a circle at the turntable diameter you can fit, set it on the shelf and look at the four leftover corners. If those corners are big enough to matter, a pull-out or rectangular tray is the better buy.
Do lazy susans waste space?
A round turntable on a square shelf always leaves the four corners empty, and that is real space lost. Whether it matters depends on access. In a corner or a deep shelf you cannot reach, a spinning circle you actually use beats a full square you never touch. On a straight shelf you can reach, a rectangular tray or a pull-out uses more of the floor.
We are not going to put a percentage on it, because it depends on your shelf and the diameter you can fit. The cardboard-circle test in the measuring section shows you the leftover corners in about thirty seconds.
Where the adhesive pull-outs fit in
There is a middle category: pull-outs that mount with adhesive strips instead of screws. They can work on smooth, clean cabinet floors, but read our adhesive pull-out organizer guide first. Adhesive on laminate can lift the finish at move-out, so a freestanding frame is the safer default.

Pick in five questions
- Is it a corner? If yes, lean lazy susan.
- Is it much deeper than it is wide? If yes, lean pull-out.
- Small items or big items? Small spins well; big slides well.
- Is the opening flat with no lip? If not, pull-outs get fussy; turntables do not care.
- Will anything need screws? If yes, it is not the right product for a rental.

Who it’s for: Jars, bottles and cans in a corner or square base.

2) Freestanding pull-out baskets
Who it’s for: Straight base cabinets and under-counter runs.
Price band: roughly $25-50

4) Rectangular turntables as the hybrid
Who it’s for: Square-ish shelves where you want both reach and corners.

FAQ
Is a lazy susan or a pull-out better for a corner cabinet? A lazy susan, in almost every rental. Corner pull-outs are installed hardware; a freestanding turntable is not.
Do lazy susans waste space? They leave the corners of a square shelf empty. In a corner or a deep shelf you cannot reach, that trade is worth it; on a straight reachable shelf, a pull-out or rectangular tray uses more floor.
Can I use a pull-out drawer without drilling? Yes, with a freestanding frame that sits on the cabinet floor. Adhesive versions exist too but are riskier on laminate.
